Once you have started on the road to becoming a technical diver it is likely that you will want to progress to be able to dive deeper and for longer. The SSI Technical Extended Range Diver certification qualifies you to dive to a maximum depth of 60 metres. These dives incorporate two gas switches, increased decompression time and multiple decompression stops. Diving deeper than 45 metres to a maximum of 60 metres also requires the addition of helium to your gas mix. This means diving with a tri-mix gas consisting of helium, oxygen and nitrogen. Within this specialisation we teach the use of normoxic tri-mix gases which maintain the oxygen percentage in the gas at between 18 and 21%
The aim of the SSI Technical Extended Range course is to provide you with the training and knowledge necessary to independently plan and conduct two-gas switch, multiple-stop decompression dives. The course also emphasises the need to be able to use specialised diving equipment and procedures. As part of the course you will also learn to dive with an equally-qualified dive buddy working together as a team when diving.
